Art and Spirituality: The Creation of the Tara Tanadug Statues

Updated: Dec 20, 2024

The Spiritual Journey of the Statues: From Brazil to Colombia

Recognizing the skill of my spiritual guide, Lama Chimed, not only as a teacher within Buddhism, but also as a great sculptor, I commissioned these sacred statues from him with the intention of bringing them to Colombia. It was he who gave me the name Dawa Drolma Rigdzin when I began my Buddhist studies and practices, a name that means "holder of Tara's luminous consciousness." This project was an essential part of my plans to return to my native country, after 30 years of living as an expatriate in Sweden, Switzerland and Brazil. Taking advantage of the logistics of my move, I knew that I could include the statues in the container, thus ensuring a safe transfer without bureaucratic complications.

A Creation Process in Three Stages

  • Traditional Sculpture: Lama Chimed molded the statues with cement and iron, following ancient Tibetan iconography. Every detail was crafted with precision, ensuring that the forms reflected the essence and spiritual attributes of the Medicine Buddha, Green Tara and Yuthok Yönten Gönpo. The figures were painted in vibrant, vivid colors, with tones that evoke the qualities of enlightenment and compassion.

  • Preparation of the Central Channels: Scrolls of printed mantras were placed inside each statue, carefully rolled and tied with ribbons. These mantras act as energetic channels that strengthen the spiritual blessings that emanate from the statues, multiplying their ability to inspire and heal.

  • Ritual Consecration: The statues were consecrated through traditional rituals led by Lama Chimed and his disciples. These ceremonies invoked the energy of the Buddhas, transforming the figures into objects of deep spiritual connection, capable of generating merit and blessings for all sentient beings.

A Careful and Protected Journey

For transport, the statues were packed in custom-designed wooden crates. Each head was carefully wrapped, ensuring its integrity during transport. According to tradition, the heads would remain covered until they were placed on their final altar, as a symbolic act that marks the transition to a sacred space.

A Spiritual Bridge to Colombia

These statues are not only objects of art or devotion; They are a spiritual bridge that connects ancient traditions with a contemporary purpose. Through their creation, transportation and consecration, the Tanadug statues become a link between the ancestral past of Tibetan Buddhism and the future of the Tara Tanadug Foundation in Colombia. This spiritual bridge not only honors the teachings of Lama Chimed, the Medicine Buddha, Green Tara and Yuthok Yönten Gönpo, but extends as an invitation to all those seeking healing, self-knowledge and inner peace.

Upon arriving in Colombia, these statues integrate as the vibrant heart of the Dewachen Sanctuary and Lake Danakosha, offering a sacred space where people can meditate, reconnect with their essence and receive the generous blessings of Green Tara and the Buddha of the Medicine. In this sanctuary, the Tara Tanadug Foundation continues its mission to heal, transform and guide those who seek a path of balance and integral renewal.
